Y-DNA Testing

Every Afghan can take a Y-DNA test from a company of their choice and add the result to our database and other databases. Because females do not possess the Y chromosome, only males can take a Y-DNA test. Tests vary according to coverage and resolution. Some companies that offer Y-DNA tests of acceptable and stable quality are: YSEQ, FTDNA, Full Genome Corps, and Nebula Genomics. Y-DNA tests that we recommend for Afghan are:

Full Y-DNA genome tests (recommended)

These tests determine your haplogroup and subclade as well as genetic distance from all other persons tested at a very high resolution, and the result can be added to the global Y-DNA tree at YFull.com. The WGS tests also provide downloadable mtDNA and autosomal data files. So our personal recommendation for most Afghans is one of the WGS tests here instead of the Big Y-700 test from FTDNA. But FTDNA has a large user base especially for Americans, and for your specific haplogroup more potential matches may exist in FTDNA then at YFull, so a FTDNA Big Y test might be more recommended for some Y-DNA haplogroups. You can also download your raw data (BAM file) from FTDNA and upload it at YFull.com, but FTDNA will charge customers $100 for a download of their BAM files.

Low-resolution tests (not recommended):  YSEQ-Alpha-Beta from YSEQ, Y37 from FTDNA. These tests are much cheaper and will be enough to determine the paternal haplogroup and in most cases the broad subclade position. But will give only a very broad and poor picture of your Y-DNA origin. Especially for relatively young and very widespread lineages like R1a-Z93, these kinds of tests are insufficient.

We encourage any Afghans interested in testing to contact us with information about family ancestry (such as family name, place of paternal origin, clan/tribe, etc.). If you have questions about DNA testing in general, please feel free to contact us as well. We will also help you in analyzing and understanding your DNA results.

Once you have an account with one of these testing companies, you can easily join the project: from your YSEQ account by clicking here and for Nebula Genomics you can contact us through the email listed at the bottom of this page. After examining the result and comparing with others in our database as well as with public and scientific databases, we will send you a report with detailed information about your haplogroup and likely subclade as well as the ancient populations your ancestors were most likely part of, as well as a list of modern Afghan matches and their geographical distributions and tribal origins.
